Mornings are the only time in this house that I can actually call mine. A few years ago I realized that I would have to sacrifice a little sleep to get a little alone time, and also drink my coffee hot. I know, so totally anti-mom of me, sacrifice those precious moments of shut eye to dare I say get ready in the morning. But it works for me. It is probably the only thing that works for me. I like to take the time and get myself together every morning that I can. Some mornings are unpredictable because obviously my children have minds of their own, but most mornings I have plenty of time to myself to get ready. And other mornings I choose to bask in the silence of my clean house (that I probably stayed up too late the night before trying to find every last Lego) before it gets destroyed.
And since this is probably the question I get asked the most, "how do you find time to get dressed and do your make up with four kids" this is how my morning goes.
My alarm goes off at 5:30 or 6:00 depending on what kind of bedtime shenanigans happened the night before. Then I stumble down the stairs to find Caspian laying by the door which is usually the signal that Chris went out for his morning run. I make my coffee, and try to make as little noise as possible. While my coffee is doing a little drip drop from the pour over, I cut up some fruit for the kids and stash it in the fridge so that when I hear their to-go orders from the stairs I can sway their hangry morning hangover. I aim to please....
Then I usually head up stairs and jump on my computer for a little bit before I get ready. Whether it is answering emails and comments, scheduling blog posts for the week, editing pictures, or catching up on some of my favorite blogs. More than likely it ends up with me shopping online and then realizing I should quit before I hit the proceed to checkout button and just go get ready! It should also be noted that I shower at night so that my hair can air dry, eliminating the need to use heat, and not having to try and accomplish that in the morning. Because you can only push your luck so far, ya know?
Now that I have chugged a cup of joe or two...rough nights call for all the heavy caffeine ammunition. I go in and wash my face and brush my teeth. Am I the only one that is super paranoid about coffee breath? Not only coffee breath but coffee stains! So I brush then rinse with LISTERINE® Total Care. You know the #1 dentist recommended mouthwash brand. At least that is what my dentist recommended since my middle school years of life and that is what I have used ever since.
I usually grab a bottle or two for Chris and I at CVS while I am there picking up any and all bug repellents. Plus, it is the only store within ten miles of my house! So, thank you CVS for thinking of us that live in the backwoods of Georgia.
After I am feeling so fresh and so clean, clean, I head into my very favorite place in the house.....my closet. I pick out the days outfit, on the days that I actually get dressed. Which happen to coincide with the days that I have to leave the house, funny how that happens. But, I pick out what I am feelin' that day and then proceed back to the bathroom to put on my face. My weekly makeup routine only takes me about seven minutes, and if it is a top knot day, I am ready in ten.
I always feel my best when I take this little bit of me time in the morning. On the mornings that I hit snooze, or throw my phone all together, I get up then feeling rushed and more than likely in a bad mood because I am starting my day overwhelmed. I am a morning person by natural, so I truly like being up before the chaos of the day begins. I feel a little more organized and confident if I can check some things off my to-do list, and be fully dressed and ready to get four other people together and get out the door on time, or late, whichever the parenting gods grant me that day.
By the time I am done, I can usually hear Avalon on the baby monitor saying "moooooom, I up come carry me down da stairs pleaseeee". She is the early riser, and by early I mean 7:30. I know what you are thinking, which is why I do not complain. All my children are pretty good sleepers, for the most part. We do have our nights where one of the girls just can't seem to get it together. But they all like to sleep in. Pierce would sleep till 10 everyday if I didn't wake him up. So it isn't too hard for me to get my morning time, every morning. It wasn't always like that. I vividly remember trying to sneak out of my bed as not to wake Odette just to brush my teeth.
Not mourning those days.....
This little chunk of time in the morning helps set the tone for me, so I ask you, what is your morning routine like?
